A Few Words About SPAM
We're doing our best to help control spam. The CANSPAM Act, passed some while ago, has really done nothing to control this blight on the net. What do we do?Using ASPAMFirst, every email that's received is checked against several ORDBs (Open Relay Data Bases). An open relay is a mail server that allows ANYONE to send email through it, even if they are not a registered user on that server. Sadly, there are large numbers of open relays in the Pacific region and Eastern Europe. It's estimated that over 80 percent of spam comes from these two geographic areas. We will reject any message that is sent from an open relay.
Second, we also check a comprehensive list of URLs that are used by known spammers and phishers. You can read more about the SURBL here
Third, we're running SurgeMail's ASPAM filter. ASPAM marks messages with special headers to inform you of messages that it thinks it are spam. You can set up most email clients to filter on one or more of these headers, meaning you can filter away your spam and never have to see it. You can also report spam that hasn't been marked as such to ASPAM, and report messages that have been marked as spam but aren't as well.
ASPAM is the successor to SmiteSpam, which was used in earlier versions of our software. While extensive online help is available, please feel free to contact us with any questions you have about your email service.
- 1. How do I configure my mail client to filter based on ASPAM headers?
- The headers in email that identify spam are X-Spam-Detect and X-SpamDetect-Info. X-SpamDetect is the header you want to filter on, it contains a number of *'s based on how likely that email is spam. The more stars the more likely it is spam, so you need to choose how many stars you want to filter for, somewhere between 4 and 8 is a good idea. Have your client move messages containing **** in the X-SpamDetect header to a folder of your choice, and check that folder every now and again, as it is possible, although not likely, that a non-spam email will recieve 4 or more stars.
- 2. How do I report spam messages which were not detected as spam?
- Just forward the message to isspam@advwebsys.com.
- 3. How do i report a message that was marked as spam, but isn't?
- Just forward the message to notspam@advwebsys.com. Note: If you do not use our server for sending mail (you use your ISP's server), you cannot forward mail to notspam.
